Oracle Virtual Box - Create VM
This runbook is designed to guide you in setting up a virtual machine that is well-suited for installing a wide range of Linux distributions, primarily for educational use. See the distributions official documentation for tailored recommendations for production use.
New Machine Wizard
Select Machine.
Select New.
Virtual Machine Name & Operating System
Set Name to the hostname you will use.
Set Folder to the location you want the VM built in.
Set ISO Image to the installation media for the OS you will later install.
Tick Skip Unattended Installation.
Select Next.
Hardware
Set your required Base Memory.
Set the required number of Processors.
Tick Enable EFI.
Select Next.
Ensure to research thoroughly your requirements based of the machines expected usage.
Virtual Hard Disk
Ensure Create a Virtual Hard Disk Now is selected.
Set Disk Size.
Tick Pre-allocate Full Size for production environments. For dev, test or home use, leaving unticked may be suitable to save on space.
Select Next.
A minimum of 20.00 GB should be suitable for most Linux Operating systems without the graphical environment installed.
Summary
Review the summary.
Select Finish.
Settings
Right click on the virtual machine.
Select Settings.
System
For Boot Order, untick Floppy.
Storage
If you wish to add another disk, select Controller: SATA, then select the hard disk icon.
Select Create.
Set the Hard Disk File Location and Size.
Set the Size.
Tick Pre-allocate Full Size for production environments. For dev, test or home use, leaving unticked may be suitable to save on space.
Select Finish.
Select Choose.
Network Adapter
Choose an Attached to type.
Choose the Name of the Network adapter on the host system to use.
Select OK to save changes.
